Cain …and Abel’s Best Friend
Yea, there wasn’t any best friend mentioned in the story but hear me out. Let’s put it this way. Cain and Abel are brothers (in the sense that of man suggested among mankind). Abel has a best friend. To be clear, it was not intentional to use the same Good vs Evil as strongly put out in the real story.
Anyways...
Cain was introduced to Jane; Abel’s best friend, through simple gestures of hello, my name is…etc. Cain grew fond of Jane’s company and figured hey, they can become great friends too! Jane didn’t mind, friends are her favourite part of living.
What Cain didn’t realize, without direct blame of whose friend was whose first – Abel was the closest to Jane. They were like brother and sister. Cain wanted someone he could count on as well despite the closeness of his brother and Jane. So his trust in her became quick out of belief that he could share just about anything with her, as do Jane with him. Promises were made, understood moreover than some, that whatever was spoken remained between them and only them.
Cain became jealous. As close as he could be with Jane, something always held him back that Jane would break her promise. Sometimes the fear focused on Abel not being able to forgive Cain of the secrets he shared with Jane.
So one particular day Cain and Abel had a disagreement. Abel repeated a concern to Cain of which only Jane would know of, which broke Cain’s trust in Jane henceforth. Days passed by, and on several occasions Cain and Jane would exchange a few words, but he was always cautious of just what to say. His biggest fear came true, conversations with Abel were no longer exhilarating since that fight, and Abel’s attention focused more on Jane. Resentment grew for Jane as he could never bring himself to question her if she had said anything to Abel, or for what purpose was Jane trying to prove.
Did Jane really expose Cain’s secret to Abel?
Can Cain forgive Jane (in the sense of letting go of the resentment)?
Was Jane really vindictive and why did she, if she really did?
You can be best friends with another’s best friend but the tricky part is, and you will never see it coming – be cautious ALWAYS of what you share. Or choose not to be, if this moral spoke out to you, especially if you know that that person cannot commit to secrecy. So you may ask, what was the big secret; so hurtful that Abel couldn’t forgive Cain? Let your imagination run wild but let’s just stick to “I poisoned his cattle and that’s why they’re sick”.
We can always choose our friends but we never really know who we become friends with.
